Australian regional airline Rex now connects Brisbane with three other capital cities and is expanding its resource pool with group member National Jet Express.

The routes operate between Brisbane and Adelaide, Brisbane and Cairns, and an additional flight between Melbourne and Brisbane. The flights are operated by National Jet Express (NJE), a Rex Group member.

These new daily flights will provide an additional 124,000 seats a year between Brisbane and Adelaide. Prior to the pandemic, 875,000 people flew between these two cities.

Rex’s Deputy Chairman, the Honourable John Sharp AM, said that the route had a strong forward booking, which demonstrated that “demand is roaring back”.

Expanding resource pools

The inaugural flight also marked a new milestone for the Rex Group, as the airline harnessed the resources of its group member, NJE, to operate some of its services with its De Havilland Q400 aircraft.

NJE will initially operate Rex’s Perth to Carnarvon flights three times a week with these aircraft, Sharp confirmed.

“Access to NJE resources opens up a world of possibilities for Rex and allows us to look closely at the viability of flying to more major Queensland coastal cities and major tourist destinations. We will be injecting more Q400NG aircraft into NJE for Queensland to meet the expanding demand for our services,” Sharp added.

Rex will also be adding additional flights between Brisbane and Melbourne over the Christmas period to satisfy passenger demand. These will be supported by the arrival of Rex’s 10th Boeing 737-800NG, due to be delivered in December.
