Icelandic low-fare carrier PLAY Airlines has appointed Einar Örn Ólafsson as its new CEO. Birgir Jonsson, its previous CEO, will remain in the role until 2 April, after which he will stay on as an advisor for the next few months.

As one of the PLAY’s largest shareholders and Chairman of the board since April 2021, Einar Örn has since rescinded his candidacy as a board member at the airline’s AGM on 22 March.

“After a great ramp-up phase these past few years under Birgir’s strong leadership, the Company is now at a turning point,” said Örn. “As the Company’s largest shareholder, I’d like to see my investment through. I am very familiar with PLAY’s operations and employees and can see ample opportunities and exciting projects in the operation going forward.”

As the outgoing CEO, Birgir Jonsson said that his time at the airline had been a “real adventure” and he would leave the role “with pride”.

“PLAY has now left its infancy and grown up to be a mature airline. I’ve had a good and close working relationship with Einar and leave the Company in his capable hands. I look forward to seeing PLAY flourish under his leadership,” Jonsson added.
