Embraer’s E195-E2 has secured certification for steep-approach clearance and can now operate at London City Airport.

To operate in London’s most central airport, known for its short runways and challenging approach, aircraft must first receive certification for Steep Approach. It must also comply with strict noise regulations.

The certification highlighted the noise reduction of the E195-E2, which surpasses the requirements of ICAO’s strict Chapter 14 regulation, offering a much quieter flying experience compared to the previous E195 model.

Having first landed at LCY during a proving flight in 2022, the Embraer E195-E2 is now the largest and most sustainable aircraft that can operate at this airport. It will join the smaller E190-E2 jet on LCY’s runway, which achieved certification in 2021.

Marie-Louise Philippe, Vice President of Sales and Marketing and Head of Region for Europe and Central Asia, Embraer Commercial Aviation, said, “London City is a special place for Embraer, and unique in many ways, not just for its famed 20 mins from kerbside to gate.

“We are proud that Embraer aircraft, with their unmatched capability to handle the demanding conditions of LCY, account for most of the airport’s operations, and we look forward to the E195-E2 joining the party.”

E195-E2 boost for LCY airport

Serving 30 destinations across the UK and Europe, London City Airport is a vital component of London’s wider connectivity. Having both Embraer E2 jets operate at the airport, with its improved fuel efficiency, makes up around 85% of aircraft movements at the airport.

Alison FitzGerald, Chief Operating Officer of London City Airport, commented that this certification signalled an “exciting new era for London City Airport”.

“With its capacity to handle more passengers while being significantly quieter and more fuel efficient is testament to our commitment to work closely with aircraft manufacturers to certify cleaner, quieter, new-generation aircraft, and we eagerly anticipate our airlines starting commercial operations of the E195-E2 at London City Airport,” she added.

Regional carrier Luxair recently ordered up to nine Embraer E195-E2 jets to operate out of London City airport in an effort to focus on its city operations and to complement the rest of its narrowbody fleet.

LCY is also the first London airport to set an ambitious target of reaching net zero by 2030.
