Thales will lead a group as part of a project to design, develop and test the use of Evidence-Based Training (EBT) for pilots in a bid to reshape the future of airline pilot training.

The PERCEVAL project (Pilot bEhaviouR and CompEtency EVALuation) will be conducted by a Thales-led consortium to validate a new approach to the behavioural evaluation of airline pilots and air traffic controllers

The project will be sponsored by the French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC), and the consortium will include the ENAC national civil aviation school, Corsair airline, and the Simaero and AviaSim training centres.

By leveraging the collective intelligence across all members in the aviation training community, this project is a new initiative that will contribute to the evolution of pilot training, and improve flight safety by reducing the risk of human error.

The introduction of Evidence-Based Training (EBT) concepts and other new training and evaluation methods means that training programmes are rapidly changing in the aviation sector.

In 2015, EASA published a first step towards the implementation of this training, and by December 2020, EASA published Regulation 2020/2193 regarding the requirements for flight crew competence and training methods using EBT.

The consortium will work towards improving the future of airline pilot training, and together will design, develop and test this new EBT concept, from ab initio training through to crew training.

In a comment to LARA, Simaero CEO, Nicolas Mouté, said: “The launch of this consortium around Thalès represents an opportunity for Simaero to consolidate its position as a leader in pilot training.

“We look forward to leveraging our expertise and know-how to contribute to research efforts alongside our partners. We firmly believe this type of collective initiative will enhance our ability to address tomorrow’s technological and safety challenges of the aviation industry,” he added.
