GKN Aerospace has unveiled its latest Global Technology Centre in Hoogeveen in The Netherlands, part of the company’s €80 million investment in the country.

This innovative hub will focus on pioneering the development of lightweight thermoplastic composite materials and an R&D electrification programme that will enable high-volume production for the next generation of single-aisle aircraft.

These thermoplastic composites will allow for a 10% weight reduction compared to traditional aircraft materials. Moreover, thermoplastics have high recyclability and fire safety characteristics which present an affordable, sustainable solution for aircraft components.

John Pritchard, President Civil Airframe at GKN Aerospace, said that “the centre will accelerate the adoption of lightweight and cost-effective thermoplastic aerostructures, further propelling aviation toward electrification.”

GKN Aerospace leads various projects in multiple countries from its established GTCs in Bristol (UK £32 million investment), Trollhättan (Sweden), and Fort Worth (USA). Each centre has its own unique expertise and operates within world-class ecosystems that include academia and strategic partners.
