AirAsia X to ramp up cargo services

In an effort to combat the rising price of airfares, AirAsia X has decided to increase its cargo service, to increase its revenue contribution to 20-25% from single digits. This will be done along with synergising passenger routes with airlines.

According to source, the Bangkok Post, the low-fare carrier might also start to use A321 narrow-body aircraft for its cargo flights in addition to its current widebody A330 fleet. 362 A321 jets will be added to the fleet from the end of this year until 2035, and could be more efficient on shorter routes.

Tony Fernandes, acting group chief executive of AirAsia X said that cargo services will make a bigger proportion of revenue over the next few years, and that they will cover more destinations as it looks to key cities in Europe such as Frankfurt and Amsterdam.
