Turboprop lessor Abelo has signed a firm order with turboprop manufacturer ATR for 10 ATR 72-600, with options for an additional 10. The order was unveiled and signed at the Dubai Airshow.

In July 2022, at the Farnborough Airshow, Abelo placed a firm order with 10 ATR 72-600, with a confirmed order for 10 ATR 42-600S – Short Take Off and Landing (STOL) – aircraft.

At the time, its CEO Steve Gorman said Abelo would look to expand and “become the go-to lessor of turboprops” and that its “strong links with ATR will prove invaluable”.

Now, over a year on from that airshow, the lessor remains firmly committed to embracing the latest in turboprop technology. The additional aircraft will allow it to meet the growing demand for cost-effective and dependable regional air travel connections.

Sustainable regional travel

ATR turboprops are highly versatile, sustainable aircraft. Burning 45% less fuel per year than a regional jet, it is recognised as the sustainable alternative to a regional jet. In 2019, the ATR 72-600 became the first-ever aircraft to receive Green Financing.

On this new order, Abelo’s CEO, Steve Gorman, said: “In ATR aircraft, we have discovered the ideal solution to support Abelo’s mission of connecting communities and businesses in an economically and environmentally responsible manner.”

Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, ATR’s Chief Executive Officer, added: “Abelo’s continued commitment to ATR is a testament to the strong market demand for fuel-efficient and cost-effective turboprops. […] Our strong relationship with Abelo relies on common purposes and visions, as well as on our joint recognition of turboprops’ great value proposition today and tomorrow. We will remain committed to providing Abelo with the most innovative solutions long into the future.”

Abelo currently has a total of 30 ATR aircraft on order. It is expected to take delivery of its first brand-new ATR by the end of the year as part of its 2022 order. Deliveries of this new order are expected from 2026 through to 2028.
