Wizz Air, Europe’s third-largest low-fare carrier, has announced that it has flown more than 500 million passengers since it started 22 years ago, making it one of the fastest-growing players in global aviation.

The figure is the culmination of a period of hyper-growth for the Hungarian airline, which has added 200 million travellers in just the last three years.

Wizz Air’s growth rate has outpaced many of its legacy and low-cost competitors, with the airline pointing out that major rivals took far longer to hit the same figure.

“This achievement is the culmination of 22 years of relentless growth and disciplined execution,” said József Váradi, CEO of Wizz Air. “While many airlines founded in the early 2000s have since disappeared, Wizz Air has risen to become one of Europe’s leading [low-fare] carriers.”
