Vietjet has collaborated with Australia’s Victoria state to operate the first direct flights between Vietnam and Australia. The new route, set to start in April, will connect Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) to Melbourne.

Launching on 31 March, the flights will be operated on Vietjet’s A330 aircraft after receiving its second delivery in April. The airline will operate an initial frequency of three flights per week, increasing to seven flights per week by December.

Passengers will also be offered a choice from Vietjet’s SkyBoss Business, SkyBoss, Deluxe and Eco ticket classes.

Melbourne is a popular tourist and study destination and welcomed 123,000 visitors from Vietnam in 2019. Vietjet joins Jetstar Airways – Australia and Vietnam Airlines, which already operate the direct route.

Tim Pallas, Victorian Minister for Trade and Investment, welcomed the connecting route between the two countries: “The arrival of another airline from Southeast Asia is a win for the Victorian economy and local jobs – showing the strength of our tourism and export markets.”

The introduction of the flight route is part of Vietjet’s plan to expand Vietnam’s global network and offer flying opportunities to millions of passengers globally. The route is hoped to increase sustainable growth in tourism, trade and the economy of Vietnam, Victoria and Australia in the coming years.

During an earlier meeting, Pallas also shared plans with Vuong Dinh Hue, Vietnam’s National Assembly Chairman H.E., to promote cooperation between Victoria and Vietnam in areas such as energy transition, education and training, aviation and tourism.
