Low-fare carrier VietJet has operated the first commercial flights to depart from Vietnam using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
The airline fuelled two aircraft with SAF provided by Petrolimex Aviation for flights departing this morning [17 October] from Tan Son Nhat International Airport, bound for Melbourne, Australia, and Seoul, South Korea.
SAF is produced from renewable sources such as used cooking oil, agricultural residues, and municipal waste and is considered a key element in reducing carbon emissions within the aviation industry.
Dinh Viet Phuong, Vietjet’s CEO, said: “Today’s Vietjet flights using SAF are particularly meaningful, symbolising green flights and eco-friendly air travel. As a pioneering airline in the research, development and usage of SAF, Vietjet remains committed to further reducing carbon emissions in aviation and fostering sustainable growth.”
The initiative represents a collaboration between VietJet, Petrolimex Aviation, and the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam to introduce sustainable practices.
VietJet, headquartered in Hanoi, was founded in 2007 and has hubs at Tan Son Nhat International Airport (Ho Chi Minh City) and Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi).
It operates a fleet primarily of Airbus A320s, A321s, and A330s.
