Haitian regional carrier, Sunrise Airways, has signed an agreement with the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission to improve regional connectivity between Caribbean islands.
Philippe Bayard, founder and Chairman of Sunrise Airways, said that a major obstacle in the Caribbean is the shortage of flights between islands. with it being often easier to fly to North America or Europe than to a neighbouring island. This is negatively impacting trade, tourism and family connections.
Under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), Sunrise Airways and the OECS Commission will collaborate to:
- Enhance regional mobility and travel within the OECS.
- Boost economic growth by improving trade, tourism, and education.
- Promote sustainable and resilient aviation practices.
- Facilitate technical cooperation, policy development, and innovation in air transport.
Dr. Didacus Jules, Director General of the OECS Commission, said that the partnership goes beyond just aircraft and runways. He sees it as building connections in a fragmented region, enabling citizens to benefit from regional integration, and making Caribbean unity a tangible reality rather than just a concept in official documents.
This MoU follows a similar agreement in May 2025 between Sunrise Airways and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) to provide humanitarian aid after natural disasters.
