Over 130 cabin crew working for Scandinavian Airlines Services (SAS), based at London Heathrow, are set to stage a four-day strike over the Christmas period, threatening severe disruption to flights between the UK and Scandinavia.

Members of the union Unite plan to walk out on December 22, 23, 24, and 26 in a dispute over SAS’s pay offer of 3.5%. With the current rate of inflation at 4.3%, Unite claims this proposal constitutes a real-terms pay cut.

Unite regional officer Callum Rochford did not hold back in his criticism of the airline. “This is real Grinch-style behaviour from SAS – it is taking advantage of the goodwill of its staff and will now be responsible for cancelled Christmas flights,” he said. “It’s a good job Santa has a flying sleigh because he wouldn’t be going anywhere on Scandinavia Airlines on Christmas Eve.”

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has not yet issued a public statement in response to the news of the announced strike action by their Heathrow-based cabin crew.
