Australian regional airline Rex has unveiled its new Melbourne-Perth route. It will be operated five days a week, starting from Friday 28 June, coinciding with the Australian school winter holidays.
The new route will be operated by Boeing 737 aircraft as Rex adds the popular route to its domestic schedule. The service will add almost 90,000 seats on one of the country’s busiest routes.
“When more airlines compete on a particular route, consumers benefit, and our record in the domestic markets speaks for itself – Rex delivers terrific value for money,” said Warrick Lodge, Rex’s General Manager of Network Strategy.
This new route is Rex’s 11th domestic service, with its Boeing 737 fleet flying to other major cities, including Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, and the Gold Coast. The carrier is rapidly expanding its domestic route network and expects further announcements to be made in the coming days.
“The introduction of Rex’s first interstate routes from our Terminal 2 is a sure sign of their confidence in the Perth market,” said Perth Airport’s Chief Commercial and Aviation Officer Kate Holsgrove.
Melbourne Airport Chief Executive Officer Lorie Argus said this new route was “great news” for the airport’s passenger traffic and tourism in both States.
“We’re excited to see Rex expanding its offering from Melbourne because we know that more choice is great for consumers. Having a third airline group flying between Perth and Melbourne will increase competition and allow more people to reconnect with family and friends or explore Victoria’s fantastic tourism offering.”
