The UK government will launch a new taskforce today (7 November) with a remit to address the challenges faced by disabled air passengers.

The Aviation Accessibility Task and Finish Group, chaired by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, the former Paralympian, will focus on improving the flying experience for disabled passengers.

The group is a partnership between industry and consumers and includes prominent figures such as disability advocate Sophie Morgan.

The taskforce will examine issues such as delays in receiving assistance when disembarking, mishandling of wheelchairs, inadequate service from airline staff, lack of access to toilet facilities and difficulty finding clear information.

The group will meet for the first time later this month and includes representatives from major airlines, including Jet2, Virgin Atlantic, Ryanair, and British Airways, as well as airports and assistance providers.

Transport Secretary Louise Haigh, who will announce the plans today at Manchester Airport, stressed the importance of ensuring a dignified and enjoyable travel experience for all passengers. For too long, disabled passengers haven’t had the standard of assistance and service they need. That’s why we are bringing together this expert taskforce to drive forward change,” she said.

Baroness Grey-Thompson said: “It is essential that the rights of each passenger are protected at every aspect of their journey, so they can travel with the respect they deserve.”

The taskforce aims to deliver recommendations to the Transport Secretary next year, leading to both short-term and long-term improvements for disabled air travellers.
