Muirhead, a supplier of high-performance aviation leather, has launched its 2025 ‘Sensation’ collection, designed to improve accessibility for blind and visually impaired passengers.
The new collection builds upon the company’s previous work in neurodiverse-friendly cabin interiors, focusing on texture, colour contrast, and tactile signposting and aims to inspire aircraft cabin designers to create more inclusive travel experiences.
Jamie O’Donnell, Lead Designer at Muirhead, emphasised the importance of empowering visually impaired passengers with confidence and dignity.
“Thoughtful seat cover design plays a crucial role,” he said. “By integrating tactile signposting, Braille, and high-contrast colours, airlines can create a more intuitive and comfortable experience.”
Muirhead’s research-driven approach has resulted in “a functional colour palette of warm earth tones, designed to foster a calming atmosphere.”
The leather incorporates raised seat numbering and Braille-embossed safety instructions, transcribed by students from the Royal National College for the Blind, using Muirhead’s advanced embossing capabilities.
To address the needs of passengers with low vision, headrests have digitally printed seat numbers, seamlessly integrated into the design to maintain a sophisticated aesthetic.
The accessible seat covers will be on display at Muirhead’s Booth 6E95 at AIX 2025 in Hamburg next month.
