magniX has launched the next phase of its NASA Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration programme (EPFD) – unveiling the regional airliner, a De Havilland Dash 7, that will be retrofitted with its electric powertrains.

This unveiling is the latest development in the EPFD programme, which achieved a slew of milestones in 2024. These include a magni650 electric engine completing the first testing phase and completing baseline flight tests for the Dash 7.

Reed Macdonald, CEO of magniX, said: “Integrating our game-changing electric powertrains into a regional airliner such as the Dash 7 represents a major step forward in bringing electric solutions into the business of aviation.”

In the next phase of the EPFD, one of the Dash 7’s turbine engines will be replaced with a magniX powertrain. Test flights are planned for 2026. The next stage will see a second engine replaced with another electric powertrain.

magniX and NASA are demonstrating that sustainable flight can be realised with technology that we have available today,” added Ben Loxton, magniX’s VP of EPFD and Electric Storage Systems (ESS). “The EPFD programme is accelerating its readiness for entry into service, prioritising safety and the highest standards of performance.”
