Lufthansa Technik, a global aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul provider, has entered a strategic partnership with Microsoft to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) across its operations.

“This partnership will allow us to harness the power of AI to solve highly complex challenges, improve our operations, and deliver exceptional value to our customers,” said Dr William Willms, Chief Financial Officer of Lufthansa Technik.

The initiative will leverage Microsoft Azure AI Services and cloud computing to implement over 50 AI-powered solutions. One key application focuses on optimising layover planning, with the potential to reduce ground time by 5-10%, resulting in significant cost savings for airlines.

“AI is the pivotal technology of our time,” said Florian Deter, Managing Director at Microsoft Germany. “In its development, security and data protection have the highest priority for us and for Lufthansa Technik.”

Lufthansa Technik will use large language models to analyse large amounts of data, including unstructured information like work instructions, code, images, and charts. By making this knowledge accessible and interconnected, the company aims to automate tasks, optimise procedures, and improve industry working practices.
