A popular destination due to its status as a visa-free region for foreigners, the service will fly to Phu Quoc International Airport once daily, with a three-hour flight duration.
HK Express was acquired by Cathay Pacific in 2021 and currently operates a fleet of Airbus A320, A320neo, A321 and A321neo aircraft. The announcement follows continuous expansion within the airline, with new routes to Penang, Malaysia and Clark in the Philippines, as well as recent news from Cathay Pacific about its plans to bolster its ASEAN network.
In recent financial results, HK Express reported a loss of HK$73 million for the first half of 2024, in contrast to a profit of HK$333 million in the first half of 2023. The airline has stated that the ongoing situation with the grounding of A320neo aircraft due to Pratt & Whitney engine issues is the source of its losses.
In reparation, the airline is expanding its network to cater to a more diverse customer base, adding more fuel-efficient aircraft, boosting aircraft utilisation and improving operational efficiency. In the first half of 2024, HK Express carried 2.8 million passengers, marking an increase compared with the same period in 2023.
