At the Farnborough International Airshow, Embraer announced the launch of the first-ever automated takeoff system in commercial aviation, the Embraer Enhanced Takeoff System or the E2TS, for the E2 family.

Designed by the Embraer engineering team, the system is designed to give E2 aircraft the optimum profile and automated takeoff, giving the aircraft more fuel, thereby extending the range and boosting the payload onboard.

With the E2TS onboard, Embraer estimates it will give the aircraft 350 nm additional range and improve functionality for the E2 at airports with shorter runways. As a software change, the system can be retrofitted onto any E2 aircraft. The manufacturer intends for the E2TS to be operational by Q4 2025.

Luis Carlos Affonso, Embraer’s Senior Vice President of Engineering and Technology Development, said that this was a patented design change to the flight control systems. Regarding pilot training for the E2TS, Affonso said that there would “probably” be no more additional training needed.

“The system is very transparent, like in an auto-landing,” said Affonso.

President and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation, Arjan Meijer, said that the decision to work on and launch the E2TS was made in response to customer demand combined with a need to push its avionics capabilities to the “next level.” Meijer confirmed that offers have already been made to customers currently awaiting delivery to retrofit the E2TS onboard their aircraft once the new system is launched.

“We always knew there’d be demand from it. Whatever you offer from a short-field airport, customers will always like to have more range and more passengers. So it’s those two coming together,” Meijer said.
