By renewing its petrol and diesel vehicles, the airline aims to save 54 tonnes of CO2 a year and has already entered 36 electric vans into service at the Berlin, Luton, Bristol, and Liverpool airport engineering bases.
“After a successful, small-scale trial at Berlin Airport last year, which saw the conversion of a number of maintenance vehicles to electric, our immediate step was to expand on a much bigger scale across our UK and European bases,” said Jane Ashton, Director of Sustainability.
She added, “This small but critical move will help us further reduce the impact of our ground operations, and we continue to try and find new ways to do this every day through the integration of operational efficiencies, including fleet renewal for aircraft and maintenance vehicles and fleet optimisation through various new technologies.”
The upgrade forms part of easyJet’s Net Zero roadmap, and the airline plans to renew more vehicles by 2025, with a goal of 80% of its bases using fully electric maintenance vans.
