easyJet and SR Technics have finalised an agreement which sees the low-fare airline acquire the SR Technics maintenance facility in Malta.
The carrier will now undertake heavy maintenance on its fleet of more than 340 aircraft and welcome a workforce of more than 400 currently based at the Malta facility to the easyJet Group.
Whilst the six-bay aircraft maintenance facility has performed heavy maintenance for the easyJet fleet for several years, the handover of the facility brings its workforce formally into the Group.
David Morgan, Chief Operating Officer for easyJet, commenting on the acquisition, said: “We are delighted to be in Malta today to mark this important milestone. We have long-held links with the island and look forward to further strengthening these in the coming years with this maintenance facility, which will mean we will employ more than four hundred people locally to maintain our growing, modern fleet of aircraft.”
The acquisition by the carrier formed part of SR Technics’ strategic growth plan, divesting its aircraft base maintenance businesses, explained SR Technics’ CEO, Owen McClave, who added that easyJet was the “perfect partner to take over our aircraft maintenance subsidiary in Malta.”
easyJet has flown to Malta since March 2009 and operates to the country from nine of its bases across Europe. It also recently announced a new route from Liverpool John Lennon Airport to Malta, which will operate year-round with departures twice a week from 10 December.
