The modification includes three Lycoming-approved unleaded fuel specifications: ASTM D7547 (UL 91 & UL 94), DEF-STAN 91-090 (UL 91), and HJELMCO (91/96 UL).
Switching to unleaded fuels is expected to bring benefits such as a reduced environmental impact, lower refuelling cost, reduced maintenance expenses, extended servicing intervals, enhanced safety, and access to a more expansive range of fuel options.
“Britten-Norman is committed to delivering a sustainable future for aviation through our Green Futures initiative,” said Mark Shipp, Technical Director and Head of Design at Britten-Norman. “This development is an important milestone for the hundreds of Islander operators who will be able to reduce their emissions through the introduction of unleaded fuels.”
The recent certification for unleaded fuel in Britten-Norman Islander aircraft should open up possibilities for new fuel types in the future, and the FAA’s decision to phase out leaded AVGAS emphasises its goal to transition to more sustainable fuels.
