Operator of Berlin airport FBB has started planning where airlines will be placed within the new site which is set to become Germany’s new capital hub. It is due to open next year.
The airport in Brandenburg will open in October 2020 and the major airlines serving Berlin now know where their flight operations will be based the FBB stated on 9 May.
EasyJet and Lufthansa will be within the main Terminal One, and Eurowings in Terminal Two. Ryanair will use the Schonefeld facility – which will become the airport’s Terminal Five. FBB will allocate space to some 80 airlines in stages over the coming weeks.
“Preparations for operations at Brandenburg are entering a new phase. The airport, the airlines and other partners have all been individually busy with the start of airline operations, and now we are starting joint preparations together,” states FBB chief executive Engelbert Lutke Daldrup.
A series of building issues and delayed planning permissions being granted has hampered construction of Berlin Brandenburg, and 8 May marks seven years since the airport’s planned 2012 opening was cancelled with just a month to go.
Berlin’s Tegel airport, located close to the city centre is to shut once the new hub is open, but there have been calls from some operators, including Ryanair for it to remain open to ensure sufficient capacity.
