American Airlines has placed an order for up to 133 Embraer regional jets to meet domestic demand in the US.

The firm order is for 90 E175s, with purchase rights for an additional 43 jets. Deliveries for these orders will begin in 2025.

The deal is worth more than US$7 billion, and the firm orders placed will be included in Embraer’s 1Q24 backlog. The E175 is the most popular aircraft in the US, with 837 aircraft sold since 2013.

This order announcement firms American’s commitment to bring the larger regional aircraft into its fleet. The airline expects to retire its single-class regional jets by end of of 2030, to serve small- and medium-sized markets with the E175.

Arjan Meijer, President and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation, said, “The E175 is truly the backbone of the US aviation network, connecting all corners of the country.

“This modern, comfortable, reliable, and efficient aircraft continues to deliver the connectivity the US depends on day after day. This represents American’s largest-ever single order of E175s, and we thank American for its continued trust in our products and people,” he added.
